Mickey and Me

There was Mickey and me
And the boys from Claverty
Rolling home late
In the tree-dark lane.

All of a rout
In our utter disparity
Quite unaware
Of the thickening rain.

Mickey said, ‘Mates,
We’re courting insanity,
Living like this
We can’t take the strain.’

But Fergal retorted
‘There is no depravity.
Live for the moment
Ignore any pain.’

They were sober then,
The boys from Claverty,
Mickey and me were silent too.
All in the rain as we courted insanity
The good times were over.
On with the new.
